Warren County Habitat For Humanity Update
The Warren County Habitat For Humanity (WCHFH) chapter announced at Rotary Club of Indianola’s weekly meeting on January 15th that they are halfway to their goal of raising $60,000 for 2016. Many businesses have already stepped forward to provide the necessary funds needed to build the Chapter’s 16th Home in Warren County.
In a previous note, statistics provided by WCHFH show that the cost of a low maintenance home in Warren County is currently at $90,000. This cost includes the materials, land and some labor, but the majority of labor used in building an HFH home is volunteer.
Volunteers include people from the community who want to help others and also like to be part of something bigger than themselves. Volunteers also include partner families who provide hundreds of hours of labor completing their own home and the home of other HFH partners.
Applicants who meet the minimum requirements submit an application for acceptance as an HFH Partner family. Businesses and Individuals who wish join the “Builders Club” are able to donate funds on an annual basis or may also volunteer to help with a portion of the next home that the Chapter builds.
Partners, including all family members, who can show an ability to repay and are accepted into the program, provide volunteer labor on their own home and the homes of other partners. Once the home is completed, the ‘Partner family’ is asked to repay a “No-Interest” loan back to the Chapter. The funds that are repaid are then used to build the next home. Currently the local Chapter receives roughly $30,000 in mortgage payments from Partners. The Partners also pay an estimated $23,000 in real estate taxes, most generally on land that otherwise was paying little or no real estate tax. A win-win for the community and the Partner families.
