Local Option Sales Tax Referendum

The City of Indianola, Iowa is preparing a Local Option Sales Tax Referendum to be held on March 1st.  The purpose of the referendum to ask voters for approval of a 1% local option sales tax on non-exempt items sold in the Indianola retail market.  Monies raised from the 1% sales tax will be used to fund a new wastewater treatment plant for the community.

The City has prepared a website page that provides information about the Local Option Sales Tax including:

  1. Ballot Example
  2. Questions and Answers
  3. Food Sales Tax Exemption List
  4. Complete Sales Tax Exemption List

City Officials have scheduled a series of public meetings designed to explain how the revenues will be used, along with an explanation of its purpose - the replacement of the city's wastewater treatment plant due to decaying infrastructure and forthcoming regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Please plan to attend one of the information meetings to better understand the purpose of the Local Option Sales Tax and more importantly the reason why a new treatment plant has become a necessity for our community.
