October Town Talk
The October Town Talk discussion will revolve around EMERGE@Simpson.
EMERGE@Simpson began in January 2013 after space was acquired in the old library building on the Simpson College campus. Based on the concept of ‘organic gardening’ and knowledge that 84% of businesses that start in a community, stay in the community, EMERGE@Simpson has grown to allow students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to gain real-world experiences in small business and the formation, launch and operations of nonprofit organizations.
With just 20 students the first semester, EMERGE@Simpson now has over 80 people participating in startup events. The program teaches core entrepreneurial principles, explores practical business development concepts, and teaches leadership development.
EMERGE@Simpson provides connections for growing ventures which can evolve into successes earning alternative funding sources for individual students, faculty and Simpson College itself.
One such success is an app called “Snitch’n”. Designed to serve the public interest by helping authorities locate felons and individuals wanted for various offenses, Snitch’n has grown into a multimillion-dollar business in two years’ time. Snitch’n won a 2014 Prometheus Award from the Technology Association of Iowa and is now used by law enforcement agencies across the country to locate criminals, suspects, missing persons, and more.
On October 13th, Town Talk will introduce the public to EMERGE@Simpson. Students from EMERGE@Simpson will be present to explain what they have accomplished and share some of their ideas for the future.
